The Effects of This Classwide Peer-Tutoring Process on Students' Engaged TimeThere is a growing body of evidence that the Effects of this Classwide Peer-Tutoring Process on Students' Engaged Time have been profound. It has been observed that teachers, who are well versed in the processes of PRT, have become more engaged in their classroom responsibilities. Further, as students in the class to graduate, they spend less time in the classroom and begin to move into areas of their life where they are most productive.In my previous posts, I have discussed this phenomenon of students moving from the classroom to other domains of their lives. Most recently, I wrote about how senior high school students were becoming high school counselors. Because of this, we had students helping parents figure out their teenage children's academic homework, helping them with athletic schedule, and helping them with driving skills. The effects of this classwide peer-tutoring process on students' engaged tim e was a big focus in my previous postings.Many of my students are now in college and several of them have commented about how much time they have spent on their studies over the last few years, which surprised me because I did not realize that they had become so successful. It seems that their 'time' in the classroom is limited by how much time they have for themselves and their friends. This is a clear demonstration of the real benefits of this classwide peer-tutoring process on students' engaged time.Additionally, I have also noticed a large change in high school students who have been involved in PE clubs or have taken dance lessons. Because of these activities, their time has increased and they have moved beyond the realm of the classroom. In fact, some of them have moved out of the classroom completely.It's also worth noting that many of these students have become more interested in school in general, rather than just in activities such as soccer or football. If teachers and pr incipals want to make their students engaged, they need to consider applying the core values of these activities to the curriculum. Of course, this applies to all subjects, but it is particularly important to address in math and science.Additionally, the core values of this classwide peer-tutoring process should be integrated into the curriculum when teaching geometry and algebra. These two subjects have long been considered to be the toughest subjects in the curriculum. While this may be true, the results of this classwide peer-tutoring process on students' engagement in geometry and algebra have been very positive.Students in science courses have been the subject of much of my discussion. Like geometry and algebra, students in science have often taken longer to graduate than other subjects and they leave the classroom with fewer skills. When students graduate in science, they become a little more mechanically oriented and lack any idea of the relationships between their different ideas.If the results of this classwide peer-tutoring process on students' engaged time can be implemented into the curriculum, it would surely benefit all of our students. It would help them better understand the connections between the different subjects in the classroom. It would help them become more self-directed and it would help them develop the ability to problem solve better.

Web Stats August 2011 Unfortunately, August 2011 was a yet another very poor performing month. And this is despite the start of the back-to-school season. As reasons for this slump we mention the loss of 32,000 Wyzant tutors and not performing marketing strategies. There were 84 unique, non-spam lead (down from 177 in July). 1,770 visitors came to Tutorz. (1,860 in July). The visitor-to-lead conversion ratio dropped substantially to 4.7% (from 6.3% in July). While the new tutor sign up increased slightly from 21 in July to 28 in August, it remains low). The traffic loss also caused Alexa’s to slightly lower Tutorz’ Global Rank down to 12.9 million (12.8 million in June) while the the U.S. local rank essentially remained constant down at 530,00. The bounce rate too has dropped from 43.6% to 46%. The graphs below visualize some of these of web statistics.

Networking is difficult even for outgoing personalities, so it makes sense that introverts may naturally shy away from the idea. But just because you’re introverted doesn’t mean that you need to give up the idea of networking entirely. In fact, there are many ways that you can focus on networking without necessarily interacting with people on a face-to-face basis. Focus on Your Presentation How you present yourself is important in networking, and that applies to networking in person as well as online. Start by getting active on social media platforms, particularly on LinkedIn. If you haven’t heard back after sending an initial email or making a phone call, it’s entirely possible that the person you’re contacting is so busy they’ve simply overlooked or forgotten the request. A follow-up a week or two after your initial contact is perfectly acceptable, and it may just generate the response you were looking for. Rely on Existing Networks, Too While it’s always important to build and expand your networks, don’t forget about the importance of your existing networks and connections. An existing network might hold the key to helping you transition professionally while still employed, or that network might have a connection who could be invaluable as you start a new business or project. In fact, a survey that LinkedIn helped to create revealed that 85% of job-seekers found their new careers through networking. Your existing network may consist of the students you attended college with, your colleagues at your past and present jobs, and the connections you’ve made on social media or through professional organizations. It’s important to cultivate these networks and to understand the universal laws of networking. While you may want to network because it will benefit you, remember that the connections in your network should also benefit from the experience, too. Look for opportunities to connect people in your network with other people or resources that could help them. Think about how you can offer them value, and be interested in their lives and professions. Networking takes time, so do this in moderation as you can manage, but remember that by investing in your network, you may be developing connections that can be valuable to you in the future, too. If you do end up meeting with a contact for coffee or find yourself at a conference, remember that you don’t have to write off in-person networking, too. Practice ahead of time, write down some questions, and remember that no one else is thinking about how shy you may be at an event, since they’ll be focusing on themselves. What makes a character great? What makes them likeable, or admirable? And what makes them so memorable that we would watch another anime series â€" or any other series for that matter â€" just for the character?Character, really, is not about cracking fun jokes, being a great warrior, or looking great. All of these things help, for sure â€" as they bring an immediate interest from the audience â€" but that’s not usually enough to see one through to the end of a series.And it’s certainly not enough to make an audience follow a franchise through five animated series, twenty anime movies, a live action film, and countless manga series â€" as is the case with Dragon Ball. Rather, a good character needs something else. A complexity, a flaw, and a development â€" but also a consistency and recognisability across all media and adaptations.In some way or another â€" even in a fantastical story â€" characters need to be realistic. They need a backstory and a personality, a compelling motivation, and a deeply human element to them. This is why consistency matters, because you don’t want a character known as being calm and cool then going berserk out of nowhere (just ask the Game of Thrones writers).Without this, th e characters are just a collection of lines spoken, fights had, or movements made. And that ain’t going to convince anyone to keep coming back.Why Anime Has Great Characters.Anime, fortunately for us, is known for its wonderful characterisation. Astro Boy is the most iconic anime character.Astro BoyOsamu Tezuka invented anime’s recognisable art style: large eyes and wacky hair. You Need to Be Visible If you have even the smallest amount of ambition for your career, visibility to the decision-makers is critical. We hear about visibility, but we don’t always understand it or think it’s in our control. Let’s look at it and why it’s important to your career: Visibility Goes Two Ways Never thought of that before, did you? It’s important for key decision-makers to have exposure to or contact with you. It’s part of their decision-making. If management or your customers understand what you contribute and how well you do it, they’re more apt to think of you for things like promotions and opportunities. It’s important for you to see what’s going on with them, which is why visibility is really two-way. If you can see what your decision-makers are focusing on and what’s important to them, you’re positioned to respond to it better. It’s a classic business proposition. If you aren’t supplying what your customer wants (in this case, upper management or customers), then you won’t be the one they select for anything. Stark but true. Here are some tips for the kind of visibility you want to get: 1. Don’t Be In Awe Oftentimes, we allow ourselves to get intimidated by those ranked above us. You have to understand that they’re people, too, and they’re working for a living. That means they also want to be successful in their jobs. Certainly, you want to be respectful of their time, but don’t steer clear of them, thinking what you do is unimportant. If it were unimportant, they would never have hired you. 2. Pay Attention and Ask Questions The most prized people (and therefore employees) of all are the ones who show an interest. Interest starts by being curious and involved with the goals of the other person. If you feel like you can’t form good questions, pay attention to what they pay attention to and ask your boss for more insight. Share important things you do that they might find interesting. Not everything you do falls into this category, which means the previous tip is vital in figuring out what to share. 3. Pick the Right Time You don’t necessarily have to schedule time for your share. You can share in group meetings, hallway or for an unplanned office drop-in. Look for opportunities. 4. Share The Right Amount One thing Introverts have to watch out for is sharing too much information. We usually house a ton of good stuff in our heads. When you share with upper management, they can typically only handle the top-level input on a topic. I call this the “scratch and sniff” of information sharing. 7 Female Guitarists to Watch in 2015 Megan L. Many dubbed 2014 the year of the woman, and in 2015 women show no signs of slowing down. Whether you spent last year hooked on Taylor Swifts 1989, freaking out about St Vincent, buzzing in the Bey-hive, or feverishly anticipating Sleater-Kinneys reunion, women dominated much of our cultural conversation about music. With  International Womens Day  coming up this weekend, its a great time to appreciate the talents and ferocity of these amazing guitar-slinging women! Check out these awesome up-and-coming female guitarists in 2015: 1. Molly Rankin Alvvays Pronounced always, Alvvays hails from Toronto. Last year, their self-titled album of jangly, melancholy pop songs earned them rave reviews on Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. If you havent had the chance to see Alvvays yet, theyre planning quite a few American tour dates this year, including stops at SXSW and Forecastle Festival. 2. Angel Olsen Angel Olsens folky guitar style paired with her lovely classic-country vocals made her album Burn Your Fire For No Witness a stand-out release of 2014. Ive seen her take the noisiest venue down to whisper-volume with just her voice and finger-picked acoustic guitar. Youll have plenty of chances to see this indie it-girl this year. Shes got a busy tour calendar, including stops at Coachella, Sasquatch Festival, and Central Park Summerstage. 3. Jessica Clavin Bleached Bleached sound like a 60s girl group reimagined as a classic 77 punk band, with a healthy dose of LA sunshine thrown in for good measure. They released their first album  Ride Your Heart  in 2013, and according to their Facebook page, sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin are currently at work on their second full-length release. I dont know about you, but Ive got my fingers crossed well get to hear it in 2015! 4. EMA When it comes to Erika M. Anderson, who releases music under the name EMA, I simply cant fangirl enough! Her guitar, raspy vocals, and electronic instruments can create dark soundscapes and grungy rock songs. Her critically acclaimed 2014 album The Futures Void painted a dark picture of the way technology is changing us and our ability to connect to each other. So far in 2015, she has created and exhibited a musical virtual reality performance art piece at MoMA PS1. EMA stands out to me both as a musician and an artist, and I cant wait to see what she does next. 5. Sadie Dupuis Speedy Ortiz Guitarist and songwriter Sadie Dupuis creates clever and driving grunge rock songs as the frontwoman for Speedy Ortiz. This Massechusetts band will be releasing their highly anticipated sophomore album The Foil Deer in April, and they have American tour dates booked for this summer. Go see Speedy Ortiz for a rock show you wont soon forget. 6. Theresa Wayman Warpaint Warpaints haunting harmonies complement both their quieter, moody tunes, and their more upbeat disco-infused jams. Warpaints music manages to be both atmospheric and funky, although it does occasionally tackle some dark themes. If you get the chance to see these ladies live, dont miss it! They currently have lots of European tour dates booked, but they will be back in the states in time to headline Desert Daze  in May. 7. Katie Crutchfield Waxahatchee Katie Crutchfield wrote and recorded the first Waxahatchee album in a single week at her familys home in Alabama, which actually says a lot about the intimate and lo-fi vibe you can expect from this project. She will be releasing her third album, Ivy Tripp, in 2015, and plans to tour extensively this year. Keep an eye out for the name Waxahatchee, and support this awesome musician when she comes to your town! Of course, there are thousands more amazing female guitarists out there!
